Anthony Hopkins’s brilliant portrayal in the film The Father has earnt him an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category. The movie revolves around Anthony’s escalating disorientation which clearly indicates his mental illness. Much of the movie is from his perspective to make viewers understand what it means to lose the ability to relate to regular life.
The movie has been filmed in a flat, beautifully designed by Peter Francis. His daughter Anne played by Olivia Colman tries to cope but seems exhausted with his condition. This is Zellner’s first feature film. Antony Hopkins suffers from Dementia and so many questions keep popping in his head: Where’s his watch? Is his daughter married? Is she moving to France? What’s happened to his other daughter? Is it morning or evening? Where’s that bloody watch?
